New “Leaf it out” scheme

You can now subscribe to the new Leaf it out garden waste collection scheme. Sign up on our portal.

As of 1 April 2024, we are operating the new garden waste collection scheme ‘Leaf it out’.

  • If you already have an existing Green Waste Club subscription with Biffa your membership will carry on until it expires. At this point you will have the option to sign up directly with us.
  • Customers with a Green Waste Club subscription dating beyond 31 March 2025 will be contacted separately. You won’t need to do anything in the meantime.
  • Your collection dates will remain the same for the time being.
  • Register or login to arrange for your garden waste to be collected.
  • Check your collection date to find out when your next collection will be
  • Brown bins and garden sacks are collected every 2 weeks.
  • Bins or sacks need to be placed on the boundary of your property (where it meets the pavement) before 6am on collection day.
  • Garden waste must be placed loose in the bin – not in bags.

Prices for the Leaf it out service

  • 240L garden waste bin annual subscription – £70
  • Garden waste sacks annual subscription – £78

What can I put in my brown bin or garden sacks?

  • Leaves, grass cuttings, hedge and tree cuttings etc
  • Any woody material under 10cm (4 inches) in diameter

What can't I put in my brown bin or garden sacks?

  • Logs or large branches (any woody material exceeding 10cm – 4 inches – in diameter)
  • Food waste such as vegetable peelings
  • Animal waste such as droppings etc.
  • Animal bedding
  • Soil, hardcore, bricks, paving slabs etc

Where it goes and what happens to it

We take the garden waste collected to facilities near Basingstoke and Winchester, where it is composted. You can buy the compost from Hampshire Household Recycling Centres under the brand Pro-Grow.

What if I can't put my brown bin out?

If you have a medical condition that prevents you from putting your waste out, you can:

Green Waste Club customers

  • As of 1 April, Biffa will pass on your subscription fee to Portsmouth City Council who will take over your garden waste collections.
  • If your subscription is due for renewal after 1 April 2024: you don’t need to do anything until your contract expires. We will start collecting your garden waste from 1 April on behalf of Biffa. When your contract expires, Biffa will close your account and you’ll be invited to join our garden waste collection scheme.

Your collection days will stay the same and you’ll keep your brown bin.
