Why energy bills are high

Because of the current conflict in Ukraine, gas and electricity prices have gone up a lot. Many people are finding it hard to pay their energy bills.

The government used to help with bills through something called the Energy Price Guarantee, but now that prices have dropped slightly, that help has stopped. Even so, bills are still about twice as high as they were before the crisis.

Who sets energy prices

Ofgem is the group that controls how much energy companies can charge. They set a limit called the Energy Price Cap, which changes every 3 months. This helps stop companies from charging too much or going out of business.

Help for homes without gas heating

We secured funding through the Warm Homes Local Grant administered by the Department for Energy, Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) to offer households funding to improve the energy efficiency of their home.

  • solar PV panels
  • air source heat pumps

You can apply on the Switched On Portsmouth website or call 0800 038 5737 (freephone).

Free replacement of old appliances

If you’re on a low income, you may be able to swap old white goods (like fridges or freezers) for new ones through the LEAP Appliances Scheme.

You’ll need a LEAP home visit first to apply. To book a free home visit, call 0800 060 7567 (free phone) or apply online.
