You can take big household items to the Portsmouth Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC). If some items are in good condition, they can be sold for reuse. Ask a staff member where to put the item when you arrive.

Some items have restrictions or charges, including:

  • plasterboard
  • asbestos
  • rubble
  • soil
  • ceramic sanitary ware (like sinks, pedestals, bidets, and toilet tanks)
  • upholstered domestic seating (like sofas, armchairs, chairs, stools, bean bags, and cushions)

For more information about accepted and restricted items, visit the HWRC website.

Upholstered furniture

You need to ensure upholstered furniture, such as sofas, cushions and padded chairs, is kept whole where possible due to new regulations.

Soft furniture might have chemicals that can harm the environment if not thrown away properly. If any parts are broken, they should be put in a bag or covered with tape to stop any pieces from getting out when moving them.
