Succession is the process where a tenancy may pass to another person after a tenant dies. This usually applies to a joint tenant, partner, spouse or, in some cases, a family member, depending on when the tenancy began and the circumstances.

In most cases, only one succession is allowed, and this gives a right to a tenancy, not automatically the same property. Evidence may be needed to confirm residency and relationship.

If succession is approved, the home must still be suitable for the household. Where a property is too large or specially adapted, a move to a more suitable home may be required, with support provided.

If succession is not possible, housing advice and support will be offered, and the tenancy will end following legal requirements. Decisions can be reviewed or appealed.
