The Pompey Monster Walk to School Challenge started as a trial to help children walk to school more often. After doing well in several Portsmouth schools, it’s now offered to other schools taking part in the School Streets trial.

Walking, cycling or scooting to school – known as stomping – helps children stay fit, keeps school gates clear of cars, improves safety and makes the air cleaner.

You can find more advice about walking to school on the road safety for children page.

How the challenge works

Schools involved in the School Streets trial can join the challenge.

During the challenge, Stomper, the leader of the Pompey Monsters, encourages children to stomp (walk, cycle or scoot) as often as they can on their way to and from school. Children earn in-app challenge badges to keep them motivated and reward their efforts.

Please note:

  • private e-scooters are illegal
  • rental e-scooters must only be used by people aged 18 or over with at least a provisional driving licence
  • only one person is allowed on a rental e-scooter at a time

Things to help

If you don’t have time to walk the whole way, try Park and Stomp. This means parking a short distance from school and walking the rest of the way. It helps children stay active and keeps the school gates safer and less crowded.

You can download Park and Stomp maps for selected schools in the documents section below.
