Director of Housing Neighbourhoods and Building Services

I see beyond bricks and mortar. Every property is a home, and I believe it should be part of a safe, secure, and supportive community. We provide services for our tenants and leaseholders that also benefit the wider community, and we are committed to maintaining a strong connection with our residents. I have spent much of my career working in Portsmouth, including over two decades at the council. While I now oversee a broader range of services, my passion remains with social housing. I am the senior officer responsible for Portsmouth Homes overall compliance against the consumer standards set out by the Regulator of Social Housing, so it’s essential to me that we deliver housing services that meet residents’ needs, provided by local staff and contractors who understand their homes, buildings, and communities.

Cllr Darren Sanders

Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Housing and Tackling Homelessness

Council housing is deeply personal to me. I grew up in council homes across Landport, Fratton, and Somerstown. My mum, and my grandparents before her, spent most of their lives in council accommodation. I’ve seen first-hand how well-managed council housing can offer safety, stability, and dignity to people who may not have many other options.

My role involves setting the policies that guide Portsmouth Homes, including decisions on rents, service charges, and major projects. I am the member responsible for complaints and act as a bridge between residents and the housing service by raising concerns, listening to feedback, and working with the team to improve the service wherever possible.

The satisfaction our tenants and leaseholders express is humbling, and my aim for Portsmouth Homes is simple: to get things right first time, more often. I want to foster a culture of openness and transparency at every level, and to ensure that Portsmouth Homes is a service our staff are proud to work for, and our residents are proud to call their landlord.
