If you receive a final notice, it means you have already had one or more reminders because your Council Tax payments are not up to date. You may receive a final notice if:

  • you missed a payment
  • you paid it, but then missed another payment later

A final notice means you can no longer pay your Council Tax in instalments. You must pay all the Council Tax you still owe within 7 days. If you do not pay the full amount within 7 days, we will apply to the magistrates’ court for a court summons for the full year’s Council Tax bill. This will add extra costs to the amount you owe.

If you are unable to pay because you don’t have enough money, you might be able to get help with your Council Tax through Portsmouth City Council’s, Council Tax Support Scheme. You can find more information and apply online.

If you need help or your circumstances have changed, please email the Council Tax team at localtaxation@portsmouthcc.gov.uk. Our phone lines are very busy, so email is the quickest way to contact us. Please include as much information as possible, especially if you would like us to consider a payment plan.

You will receive an email confirming we have received your message. No recovery action will be taken while you are waiting for a response or if you are issued with a new Council Tax bill.

You can also contact us using our online form, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

When using the form:

  • Under which service would you like to contact us? Select Council Tax
  • What would you like to contact us about? Select the appropriate option for your enquiry.

Alternatively, you can call us between 9am and 4pm, Monday to Friday:
