Choosing a provider

When selecting a care provider, it’s important consider quality and standards.

  • The Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulates health and social care services in England and provides ratings for each provider.
  • The Homecare Association requires its members to follow a code of practice, including treating customers with dignity and respect.

Social care regulations do not apply to services like cleaning, gardening or handyman work. However, some home care agencies may offer help with these tasks.

If you're unhappy with your care provider

If you have concerns about your care provider:

  1. Speak to them directly – many issues can be resolved through a conversation.
  2. If that’s not possible, you can submit a complaint through their own complaints process.
  3. If Portsmouth City Council is commissioning your care and you’re not satisfied with the provider’s response, you can raise your concerns with us by submitting a complaint online.

If you have a social worker, it’s also important to let them know so they can support you.
