We aim to keep green areas safe and tidy and to support tenants who genuinely need help. That’s why we offer a complimentary gardening scheme for residents who are unable to manage their garden themselves due to age or ill health.

We can help with essential maintenance such as grass cutting, trimming hedges and keeping trees safe.

Important - limited capacity

The scheme has very limited spaces and operates on a one‑in, one‑out system.

This means you may not be added straight away, and we can only accept new applicants when a space becomes available.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the scheme you must:

  • Be over the state retirement age or be registered as disabled
  • Be in receipt of Universal Credit or Housing Benefit
  • Be physically unable to maintain the garden yourselves
  • Have no one able bodied who could reasonably be expected to help you

To apply or find out more, please email us at housingdepot@portsmouthcc.gov.uk or call 023 9268 8444.

After you applied

If you’re new to the scheme, we’ll visit your property to agree what work is needed. After that, you can contact us whenever you need assistance.

It’s important to let us know about any changes to your circumstances or access to your property.

Please note:
Our teams also maintain communal areas across all housing estates, so we may not be able to visit immediately. We’ll let you know when to expect us.

If we can't help you right now

If our capacity is full or you don’t qualify, you might want to consider:

  • Friends, family or neighbours who may be able to help you with light garden tasks
  • Local charities, community groups, or gardening clubs that offer practical support, such as:

These options may provide quicker or more flexible help, especially if you only need occasional support.

Leaving the scheme

To be removed from the scheme, contact us at housingdepot@portsmouthcc.gov.uk or 023 9268 8444.

If you no longer qualify for the scheme or if you haven’t used it in a long time, we’ll take you off the list so that other tenants in need can use the service.
