This page gives specific advice for people who have recently left prison and are homeless, or worried about becoming homeless.

What support is available

There are special rules that councils must follow when helping people who have been in prison. These rules are written in a guide called the Code of Guidance.

When we look at your housing application, we’ll also speak to people who know your situation – like probation services or youth offending teams. This helps us understand what kind of home and support you need.

You can ask any council for help, but it’s usually best to apply in an area where you have a local connection – for example, where you’ve lived or worked before. Just being in prison in an area doesn’t count as a local connection.

We’ll look at the usual things when deciding if you can get temporary housing. But we’ll also think about whether your time in prison makes you more vulnerable and in need of extra help.
