Where to find us

If you’d like to visit the kennels, please give us a call. Due to the nature of the job, we’re not always in the office so may not be around if you just turn up.

What we do

Stray dogs can cause many problems such as serious road accidents or biting a child, as well as being stressful for the owner of the lost dog. We assist the public by taking in or collecting stray dogs found in Portsmouth. After assessing the dog’s condition, we then care for them in our modern kennels facility until we can contact the dog’s owner. Most of our dogs are successfully reunited with their owners. But if no owner comes forward then we also work hard to re-home the dogs in our care.

You can also read more on our website about dog control orders and penalties for dog fouling.

Did you also know we…

  • rescued 80 dogs last year
  • microchipped a lot of dogs!
  • reunited 55 dogs with their owners and rehomed the rest
  • won gold standard in the RSPCA Pawprint awards for the eighth year running! Check it out.

I've lost my dog

Losing your dog can be stressful and emotional, but there are several steps you can take to find your pet:

Stray dogs

When a dog does not have a person in charge of it or no identification tags, and is wandering in a space it is not supposed to be, it may be a stray dog.

To report a stray dog, please:

If the dog has an owner, and is reunited, the owner will be expected to pay a £58 fee to cover the collection and kennelling costs. After 24 hours, the owner will be charged an extra £22 for each day the dog remains in our care.

Tips to avoid your dog straying

You are required by law to put an identification tag with your address and phone number on your dog when in a public place, so you can be contacted if your dog is found.

To avoid straying:

  • be in control of your dog
  • microchip your dog (now required by law). Our animal wardens can microchip your dog for a small fee. Email us if you’re interested.
  • never let your dog roam free on public roads or highways

If you have a garden, ensure the gates and fences are secure to avoid your dog from getting out.

If you’re not sure if your dog is microchipped, please call or email us.

Get involved

Many of the dogs we take in need extensive rehabilitation and vet care. To keep our long-term residents warm and comfortable, we need your help.

  • Donations – 100% of your donations will go towards helping the dogs in our care. Make a single donation online or email dogs@portsmouthcc.gov.uk to set up a regular payment.
  • Buy from our Amazon wishlist – Any donations you can make are hugely appreciated. Or you can buy the same products from somewhere local and drop them into the kennels (and say hello to the dogs while you’re there if you want!)
  • Volunteering – Could you help us with cleaning and feeding, driving dogs, fostering or fundraising? If so, pop us an email saying who you are, what you could help with, and your weekly availability.
  • Rehoming – We work hard to prepare stray dogs for re-homing if nobody claims them within seven days. If you’re looking to adopt, here’s the rescue centres we use to rehome our stray dogs:
