Losing your dog can be stressful and emotional, but there are several steps you can take to find your pet:

• call us on 023 9268 8181 (during opening hours) or 023 9282 4244 (out of hours)
• report it on National Pet Register.

Stray dogs

It may be a stray dog if it doesn't have a person in charge or no identification tags, wandering in a space it should not be.

To report a stray dog, call us on 023 9268 8181 (during opening hours) or on 023 9282 4244 (out of hours).

If the dog has an owner and is reunited, the owner will be expected to pay £58 to cover collection and kennelling. After 24 hours, there's an extra charge of £22 per day the dog stays in our care.

How to stop your dog straying

By law, you are required to put an identification tag with your address and phone number on your dog in public places.

To prevent straying:

• keep your dog under control
• microchip your dog (required by law). Our animal wardens can microchip your dog for a small fee - email dog.kennels@portsmouthcc.gov.uk if you’re interested.
• never let your dog roam on public roads or highways
• if you have a garden, make sure gates and fences are secure
