Portsmouth’s seafront has a rich history, from its coastal defences to its cultural and creative spaces. We work to protect this heritage while making it relevant, accessible and useful today.

Hotwalls and historic defences

The Hotwalls area and Old Portsmouth defences are some of the city’s most historic features. In recent years, the area has been carefully restored and brought back into use:

  • historic buildings have been repaired and reused as creative workspaces for artists and makers
  • public spaces have been improved, making the area more welcoming and accessible
  • the project has helped bring new life to the seafront while respecting its heritage

These improvements help preserve the character of the area while supporting local businesses and cultural activity.

Southsea Castle and The D‑Day Story

Southsea Castle and The D‑Day Story are key heritage sites along the seafront owned and operated by the council, telling the story of Portsmouth’s role in the city’s coastal defences and military history:

  • ongoing investment has improved visitor facilities and displays
  • public spaces around these sites have been enhanced, making them easier to access and enjoy
  • these sites play an important role in sharing Portsmouth’s history with residents and visitors
