Portsmouth is a busy city, so noise is part of everyday life. We can’t promise complete peace and quiet, and sometimes there may be noise that causes a bit of disturbance.

We work with the police and the anti-social behaviour team to stop or sort out serious or ongoing noise problems. If you report a noise issue, we’ll look into it and try to fix it.

Common noise problems

Most noise complaints are about:

  • loud sounds from homes
  • music from pubs and clubs
  • noisy animals
  • business noise, like deliveries or machines
  • building and demolition work
  • factory noise
  • alarms from buildings or cars

We get around 2,500 noise complaints each year. Most come from people who are having problems with noisy neighbours.

Night time noise

Noise often happens in the evening or at night. Our night noise team can help during these hours:

  • Monday to Thursday, 4pm to midnight
  • Sunday, 4pm to 11.30pm

When you contact us, we’ll explain what we can do and how to reach the night noise officer. Because lots of people need help, we can only look into night noise after you’ve registered and activated your complaint.
