Business rates (or non-domestic rates) are normally paid by the occupier of a non-domestic property. If the property is empty, it’s usually the leaseholder or owner who pays the rates.

The amount you pay is calculated using the property’s rateable value and the appropriate annual multiplier.

Relief

The amount you pay may be reduced if you’re eligible to claim certain reliefs. Find out more about business rates reliefs and exemptions.

Changes in circumstances

If you are already receiving a relief or exemption and your circumstances change, you should let us know within 21 days of the change.

How to pay your business rates bill

The bill is paid in instalments. Payment is due on the 1st of each month, unless you choose to pay by Direct Debit where other dates are available or you have contacted us to make an alternative arrangement.

You can choose to pay your business rates over 12 instalments from April to March. If you want to do this, contact us on 023 9268 8588 or at businessratesteam@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.

If you change to 12 monthly instalments during the year, we’ll give you the maximum number of instalments remaining in the current financial year. Your next annual bills will then be payable over the full 12 months.

There is a minimum instalment amount of £50 per month, or one instalment if your bill is £100 or less. If this applies to your bill, we can’t take your payment over 12 months.
