The Southsea Coastal Scheme is a major project to protect the south of the city from flooding and rising sea levels. It is being delivered for Portsmouth City Council by Coastal Partners, working with contractors and specialist teams.

The scheme covers around 4.5km of seafront, from Long Curtain Moat in the west to St. George’s Road junction in the east.

It will help reduce the risk of flooding to:

  • more than 10,000 homes
  • around 700 businesses

It also helps protect key infrastructure, heritage sites and access routes along the seafront. We are also taking the opportunity to enhance the scheme and the seafront with additions like the Windbreaks art gallery near Speaker’s Corner.

What this means for residents

  • works are taking place in phases along the seafront over several years
  • there will be some disruption during construction, including changes to access and traffic
  • improvements include new sea defences, upgraded public spaces and better access along the promenade

As well as protecting the city from flooding, the scheme is designed to improve the seafront for the future, making it safer, more accessible and more resilient.
