Climate change is not some distant possibility, but something that we are already living with. Extreme nature events are being seen across the globe right now.

We all have a part of play in building Portsmouth’s resilience to the impacts of climate change. As a city council we work to protect our city by investing in nature-based solutions, such as planting trees and finding opportunities to introduce greenery and softer landscapes to help with cooling and drainage. We are investing in protection from major flooding and coastal erosion through our multi-million-pound sea defence programme.

Protecting and enhancing the city’s natural and built environment is one of the key priorities within our Corporate Plan for 2024-26. We are working with partners to make Portsmouth greener and cleaner for everyone. We declared a climate emergency in 2019 and are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as a climate-friendly organisation. We are also working to address other important environmental issues such as supporting biodiversity, tackling air pollution and campaigning for cleaner water.

We hope you find this website helpful and are inspired by the actions already being taken by our communities, businesses, and the council to enhance the city’s resilience to climate change.
