Portsmouth has a rich and varied small business sector, with nearly 8,000 active companies registered to Portsmouth, of which about 80% are microbusinesses (meaning they employ less than 10 people).
Our businesses are equally affected by the cost of living crisis, with reliance on unpredictable and rising prises of electricity, gas heating, and water usage causing many business to struggle. The only way to be free of these utility price increases is to reduce consumption through efficiencies and move towards cheaper and cleaner renewables.
Currently, commercial and industrial organisations in Portsmouth contribute to at least 25% of our city’s greenhouse gas emissions. Portsmouth City Council works with businesses to drive forward the transition to a zero-carbon economy through low-carbon recovery and clean growth. This effort aims to create more and better jobs in the low-carbon and clean technology sectors, increasing skill levels, foster innovation within the city, and reduce energy consumption from all industrial and commercial sectors.
