Cllr Pitt at City Vision conference

A special conference discussing how to achieve Portsmouth’s city vision and plans for the city’s centenary in 2026, has has been hailed as a “massive success” by the Leader of Portsmouth City Council.

Following the launch of the city vision in 2021, organisations from across the city were brought together to establish ways they can work together as “Team Portsmouth” to help make the vision a reality, and commit to taking tangible steps towards the vision by 2026.

It was also an opportunity to start the discussion on how they can mark Portsmouth’s 100 year anniversary as a city in 2026, before the council continues the conversation with residents.

The ambition is to create a celebration that leaves a real and lasting legacy for Portsmouth’s people and communities. It will also be an opportunity to applaud everything that is great about the city, as it reaches this very special landmark birthday. In the coming weeks, residents will also be asked for their ideas on how this milestone could be marked, before plans are put in place.

Portsmouth’s Youth Cabinet also played a leading role in the event, to ensure that the voice of young people was heard. They are are a group of young volunteers, aged 11-18, from across the city’s secondary schools, who are striving to make change happen, so Portsmouth can be the best it can be.

Councillor Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council said: “The event was a massive success, and the passion that people have for this great city came over loud and clear. By bringing together such a wide breadth of knowledge and experience from across Portsmouth, we’ve got lots of brilliant ideas on how we can achieve the city vision, along with commitments from all attendees.

“I’m also excited by some of the potential plans for Portsmouth’s centenary. We’ll be looking at all of them in detail, and then speaking to residents to see what ideas they have that we can also take forward”.

The city vision was created based on a simple question: What do we want Portsmouth to be like in 2040? By bringing together around 2,500 people representing residents, businesses and organisations who live and work in Portsmouth to talk about our hopes and dreams for the city, the building blocks for the vision were formed.

Workshops, focus groups and a city-wide consultation were undertaken so everyone’s ideas about what sort of city Portsmouth should be 2040 were taken into account. In 2021, the city vision was launched based on the outcomes of this research. Organisations in the city then made a commitment to embed the aspirations and values set out in the vision into their plans and projects.
