We want children to recognise risks online, know what to do if something goes wrong, and recover from any problems they face.
Beware of lurking trolls website helps 7–11-year-olds learn how to stay safe online in a fun, engaging way – through books, cartoons, music and more. There’s also advice for parents, carers and teachers. It also helps families talk openly about online safety and build children’s confidence when using the internet.
Watch former CBeebies presenter, Joanna Adeyinka-Burford, introduce the troublesome trolls in the short videos below.
Read the Trolls books
Two colourful storybooks, Beware of Lurking Trolls and Perils of the Possessed Pets, help children deal with online bullying, fake news, viruses and radicalisation.
They are available at schools and libraries in Portsmouth. Children can also watch or listen to narrated versions at the Lurking trolls website.
Watch the cartoons
Cartoons help children spot online dangers, learn what to do, and start conversations with trusted adults about online safety.
Cartoons have been created by master-animators, Rival Animation.
Resources for grown-ups
The Local Safeguarding Children Partnerships (LSCPs) in Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and Southampton have launched the Lurking Trolls campaign.
Parents and carers
You can borrow the books from schools and libraries, listen to the stories and watch the cartoons with your child, and get tips on how to talk to your child about staying safe online. Visit the Lurking trolls website for advice and support.
Teachers and professionals
Teachers can use the Lurking Trolls as part of online safety and relationships education. You’ll find seven resource packs with ideas for activities, and storybooks and cartoons to support your teaching.
