Pride in Place is a new 10-year programme that helps communities make their neighbourhoods better places to live.
The government has chosen two areas in Portsmouth to take part:
- Landport (referred to in the government documentation as Fratton West)
- Paulsgrove (referred to in the government documentation as Paulsgrove East)
Each area will receive up to £20 million over the next ten years. This funding will support local people to make real, long-lasting improvements to their community.
Purpose of the programme
The programme aims to:
- build stronger communities - helping people feel connected, supported and proud of where they live
- create thriving places - improving local spaces, facilities and the look and feel of the neighbourhood
- give local people more say - making sure residents help decide what matters most and how money is spent
How decisions will be made
Each area will have a neighbourhood board. This board will be made up mostly of local residents and people who work in the area, along with the local MP and Portsmouth City Council.
The board will:
- listen to the community
- look at local needs
- choose the main priorities
- agree how funding is used
- create a 10 year plan for the area
The board must be community-led so that local voices guide every decision.
Independent chair
Each neighbourhood board is led by an independent chair, who
- knows the area well
- is trusted locally
- can bring people together
- listens to all views
- wants to make the neighbourhood better
The chair helps set up the board, run meetings and make sure decisions are fair and open.
The appointed chairs are:
- Landport: Father Bob White, Archdeacon of Portsdown and Vicar of St Mary’s
- Paulsgrove: Father Hugo Deadman, Vicar of St Michael’s and All Angels church
Why this matters
Pride in Place gives people living in Fratton West and Paulsgrove East a chance to shape their future. It gives communities money to make improvements, time to plan properly, a real say in decisions, and support to turn ideas into action.
This is a long-term investment in local people and local places.
