Portsmouth City Council has been monitoring groundwater levels in Portsmouth to help reduce the risk of flooding.

This work began as part of a preliminary groundwater investigation in the Local Flooding Risk Management Strategy. The latest study Groundwater Levels Trends in Portsmouth 2019-2024 builds on the earlier work from 2014-2019.

We’ve identified the areas most at risk. This helps us understand the causes, probability, and the impact of groundwater flooding now and in the future, and supports our efforts to reduce flood risk across the city.
