The Falkland Islands became a Sister City in 2021
Supporting veterans who remain in the city through the Armed Forces Covenant is a significant factor for formalising the link. Whilst the geographical distance between the Falkland Islands and Portsmouth is considerable, it is hoped that our Sister City link will bring closer working ties which can be facilitated through both the military and business links already established.
The island owns the Gosport Ferries and sends many of its older children to study in our city once they have left the Islands’ secondary school. Many of the ships sent to war in 1982 were Portsmouth based and the Islands host some UK soldiers on exchanges for R&R due to PTSD to this day. Portsmouth has a permanent memorial to those who lost their lives in the Falklands Conflict and the annual anniversary of the conflict is commemorated in Old Portsmouth by the Falklands’ memorial.
