What is a micro-provider
Micro-providers are local people who offer care and support to help you live independently at home.
A micro-provider can:
- give support tailored to your needs
- offer flexible support at times that work for you
- help you stay independent
- provide support from someone local
- build a trusted relationship with you over time
- give you more choice and control over your support
Put simply, it is local people helping local people.
Types of support available
The support offered varies between providers, but may include:
Everyday Support
- help to stay independent at home
- preparing meals
- shopping and collecting items
- help with paperwork and organising things
Companionship and wellbeing
- companionship and social support.
- going for walks together
- support to attend appointments
- help to take part in community groups and activities
Home and garden
- housework and cleaning
- decluttering and organising the home
- gardening
- small jobs around the home
Specialist Services
- personal care
- short breaks for family carers
- mobile hairdressing
- dog walking and pet care
Is a micro-provider right for you?
A micro-provider may be a good option if you:
- want more choice about the support you receive
- know what help you need and how you would like it provided
- would like to work directly with the person providing your support
- prefer support from someone local
- feel confident managing your own support, or have someone who can help you manage it
Costs
You agree the cost of support directly with the micro-provider. If you receive a direct payment, an agreed hourly rate may apply.

Find a micro-provider
You can find a micro-provider using our directory. If you cannot use it, email micro-enterprise@portsmouthcc.gov.uk and we can provide it in another format.

Choosing a micro-provider
Before choosing a provider, we recommend that you:
- ask for references
- check qualifications and experience
- read their service information and policies
- talk about your needs and expectations
- make sure you feel comfortable with the provider you choose
