Portsmouth Central Library is celebrating its 50th birthday this July with a packed programme of events for all ages, including a special appearance by acclaimed author Michelle Magorian.
The writer, born in Southsea, is best known for her children’s novel set in world war two entitled ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’, and will be in conversation at Portsmouth Central Library on Saturday 11 July as part of the anniversary celebrations marking five decades of the much-loved building at the heart of the city. She will speak about her childhood and the places in the city that have inspired her creativity, such as the Central Library, Kings Theatre and local cinemas, as well as drawing on her acting skills to bring to life some of her recent short stories.

The celebrations will include free family activities, bookable events, performances and talks, giving people the chance to celebrate the library’s past, present and future.
The building first opened on 14 July 1976 as Portsmouth Central Library and was renamed Norrish Central Library in 1993 in honour of Ken Norrish, who was head of Portsmouth City’s Architects’ Department and designed several landmark buildings across Portsmouth.
Cllr Steve Pitt, Leader of the Council with responsibility for culture, said: “Central Library is a hub in the centre of the city and is a great place for groups to come together and access the information and facilities that it holds. I hope you’ll join us to celebrate 50 years of reading, sharing, learning and community.’
A full day of birthday fun will take place on Saturday 11 July, with free drop-in activities running from 10am to 3.30pm.
Families can enjoy drop-in activities including a 1970s dressing-up box, birthday cake, design-a-birthday-card activities, a treasure hunt, an exhibition on the history of the library and meet-and-greet opportunities with Dennis and Gnasher, plus other popular characters.
Visitors will also be able to take home a commemorative balloon, sticker and pen to mark the occasion.
Alongside the drop-in activities, some bookable events will take place throughout the day. There will be free behind the scenes tours for adults and Michelle Magorian in conversation, as well as a 1970s music party to close the day with a bang.
For a small charge visitors can also book onto LEGO workshops for children and build a mini Central Library.
On the library’s official birthday, Tuesday 14 July, the celebrations will continue with Dr Jo Holmes, PhD researcher, presenting a fascinating talk on 100 Years of Portsmouth Libraries.
