visualisation of new art exhibition on seafront

Local artists have until 27 September to submit their work to feature in a new project called The Windbreaks, a series of exhibition panels below a brand-new shelter provided by Portsmouth City Council as part of the Southsea Coastal Scheme.

The Windbreaks will form an outdoor gallery near Speakers’ Corner as part of the council’s seafront arts programme to enhance the new sea defences through a series of sculptures and public art projects.

Alternating artworks will feature across five, double-sided windbreak panels on a temporary basis, with the art being replaced every four months.

The new structure replaces the old, deteriorated tram shelter which was a popular fixture on the promenade near Speakers’ Corner.

It will feature a fabric canopy supported by two masts, with five large windbreak panels to protect visitors from sea winds and provide a surface for public art.

The stretch of promenade that will feature The Windbreaks is expected to open in December 2024.

Cllr Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council,  said:

“This is a fantastic opportunity for local artists to have their work recognised and to be part of a new, vibrant addition to the seafront.

“This space has a dual purpose. It will not only provide the local community with a new shelter that people have been very keen to have installed; it will also give the artists of Portsmouth a stage to showcase their talents.”

Harry Scott, seafront arts programme officer at Portsmouth City Council added:

“We’re really excited to launch The Windbreaks project which will showcase the talents of local creatives in a prime spot within the new sea defences.

“This is part of an exciting programme of projects that we are planning for the seafront which will offer lots of opportunities for local artists.”
