Portsmouth City Council has announced a partnership with community arts organisation Downtown Pompey to celebrate the rich history of Portsmouth’s high streets while sparking conversations about their future.

Downtown Pompey will open a dynamic temporary pop up in Cascades for community meetings, workshops and work with businesses and residents to create a community film to celebrate Commercial Road.

The Fabulous Josh, Artistic Director of Downtown Pompey said:

“I am excited that we will be working in Cascades and celebrating the past, present and future of our highstreets.

“Speaking to people is our bread and butter at Downtown Pompey.  We really want to understand what people want in Portsmouth and figure out how we can amplify unheard voices and create meaningful and inclusive art.

“Commercial Road has been home to many of my childhood memories so being able to work alongside the council to bring Downtown Pompey to our city centre is a wonderful opportunity”.

“This project isn’t just about history—it’s about empowering our community, amplifying creative voices, and creating a space that reflects Portsmouth’s diversity and resilience.”

Cllr Steve Pitt, Leader of the council with responsibility for economic development said:

“Whilst our ambitious city centre regeneration plans are being progressed, we want to work with local organisations and residents to support Commercial Road businesses.  Our city centre remains a vital place for our communities and local economy.”

The Downtown Pompey project has received £10,750 from the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
