Portsmouth City Council and Colas are calling on Portsmouth residents to submit their best name ideas for four of the gritters helping to keep the city’s roads safe and clear this winter.
Colas’ winter maintenance programme helps ensure safe journeys across the city in the event of ice or snow. The priority of the programme is to ensure all transport routes in and out of the city, including major bus routes and access to places such as hospitals, schools, train and bus stations, and shopping centres, are clear and accessible. Colas’ depot in Farlington has a salt barn which is kept stocked up and can hold 850 tonnes of salt.
Portsmouth residents are encouraged to get creative and submit their name ideas for the gritters. The four winning names will be chosen by Cllr Peter Candlish, Cabinet Member for Transport at Portsmouth City Council. The names will be announced in the new year and displayed on gritters operating throughout the city.
Cllr Peter Candlish, Cabinet Member for Transport, said:
“This gritter naming competition helps to highlight the vital work done to keep the city’s roads safe for everyone during the winter. So please make your suggestions, and we’ll put the best or funniest ideas on gritters you’ll see out and about on Portsmouth’s roads this winter.”
You can nominate a name for one of the four gritters by emailing citytravel@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.
You can also submit name ideas by commenting on one of our social media posts about the competition at facebook.com/Portsmouthcitycouncil, Instagram: @portsmouthcitycouncil, or X: @portsmouthtoday.
