A Cosham takeaway was temporarily closed following the discovery of an active mouse infestation.

Portsmouth City Council carried out immediate enforcement action against West Grill, located at 7 Spur Road, Cosham PO6 3DY, following a revisit inspection on Tuesday, 18 November 2025.

The business, operated by North Grill Cosham Ltd, had previously received a Food Hygiene Rating of 2 (Improvement Necessary) in September 2025 after evidence of low-level mouse activity was found in the kitchen. Despite being made aware of the issue, the business failed to implement adequate measures to protect food safety.

During the latest inspection, the officer discovered an active mouse infestation throughout the kitchen and servery areas. Mouse droppings were found on the pizza oven, around drink bottles, and next to open food. The premises were described to be in a filthy condition, with equipment covered in grease and food debris, creating an environment that attracted pests.

Due to the imminent risk to public health, a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice was served, and the premises were closed immediately on 18 November, 2025. On Friday, 21 November 2025, a District Judge at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court granted a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order, requiring the business to remain closed until essential remedial works were completed.

Cllr Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council said:

“Our Regulatory Services team is committed to protecting public health and ensuring food safety across Portsmouth. When serious risks are identified, action is taken quickly and decisively to prevent harm. We urge all food businesses to take their responsibilities seriously, and we remain committed to supporting them in meeting high standards.”

These works have now been carried out, and the business has been permitted to reopen.

Photographic evidence was submitted to the court to support the enforcement action.
