We’re working across the council to keep services running safely and smoothly during the extreme heat.

As a result, there are some temporary changes. Waste collections have been starting earlier since Monday 22 June, and Household Waste Recycling Centres across Hampshire will close at 12.30pm on Wednesday 24 June and Thursday 25 June to protect the wellbeing of staff and residents.

We’re also advising people to plan ahead when travelling during the heatwave. This includes checking public transport updates before setting out, allowing extra time for journeys, and if you’re driving, carrying water and avoiding the hottest part of the day where possible.

Anyone affected will be contacted directly where needed, and services are expected to return to normal as temperatures ease.

Schools

Decisions about closures or early finishes are made by individual schools, and they will keep parents informed directly through their usual communication channels if anything changes.

We are in contact with schools and have shared national Department for Education guidance, which includes practical advice on managing extreme heat, such as keeping buildings cool and supporting pupils’ wellbeing during hot weather.

School crossing patrols will not be operating during the afternoon school run while temperatures remain high, to help protect their safety.

Here’s more information on staying safe in the hot weather.
