Diversions will be in place on the M275 northbound from 10pm on Friday 29 May until 5am on Monday 1 June, with clearly signed traffic management and diversion routes in place throughout the weekend.
The work is part of Portsmouth City Council’s ongoing investment in the city’s road network, with essential improvements being carried out to several structures along the M275, including bridge joints and bearings. This follows similar successful work on the southbound route earlier in the month.
During the closure, traffic leaving Portsmouth via the M275 will be diverted via the Tipner Interchange roundabout to avoid the bridge. Traffic management measures will be installed on Hope Street, Mile End Road and the M275 and on both Church St / Mile End Rd and Rudmore roundabouts to help manage traffic flow around the affected area.
Drivers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and consider alternative routes out of the city or different ways to travel where possible.
Trains, buses, Voi e‑scooters and e‑bikes, taxis and private hire vehicles are all available, and the Park & Ride service will remain open, with access managed via signed routes. Some bus services may be affected, so passengers are encouraged to check with operators before travelling.
Cllr Peter Candlish, Cabinet Member for Transport at Portsmouth City Council, said:
“Carrying out work on the M275 northbound is not something we do lightly, but this is essential work to keep one of the city’s most important routes safe and reliable.
“We’re doing this work over a weekend to help minimise disruption, and clearly signed diversion routes will be in place throughout. The work forms part of a wider preventative programme designed to keep Portsmouth’s roads well-maintained and triple green rated by the government and to ensure the network resilient for the future.”
