The Leader of Portsmouth City Council has pledged his support for veterans and wants others to join the Help for Heroes’ ‘People’s Promise’ at Gunwharf Quays.

Help for Heroes has brought its Peace Puzzle to Gunwharf, asking people to make a commitment on a puzzle piece to help create a society that supports and fulfils its duty to veterans. The stand will be there until Saturday 23 August for people to sign.
Leader Cllr Steve Pitt added his pledge to the puzzle, committing the council to upholding the Armed Forces Covenant it is a proud member of.
Making his promise, Cllr Pitt said:
“Our Armed Forces community is defined by resilience, skill, and service. Many veterans transition into civilian life with strength and success, contributing to our community in powerful ways.
“But for those facing challenges, we must be there. That’s why Portsmouth City Council supports Help for Heroes’ Peace Puzzle campaign.
“Here in Portsmouth, we’re taking real action. We work with partners like Veterans Outreach Support to help those with complex needs. We encourage veterans to join our workforce, knowing we’re an employer that understands and values their experience.
“We champion the Armed Forces Covenant, ensuring no one is disadvantaged in accessing public services. We collaborate with health partners to promote Veteran Aware accreditation and trauma-informed care. And through events like Armed Forces Day, we foster community compassion and gratitude.
“This is about respect. It’s about recognising the strength veterans bring, and making sure support is there when needed.
“Together, piece by piece, we’re helping build a future where every veteran can find peace.”
The Peace Puzzle is at Gunwharf Quays Central Square from Thursday 21 – Saturday 23 August. People can also make an online promise to veterans: Make a promise to veterans | Help for Heroes
