What to do if you smell gas

If you smell gas in your home, follow these steps immediately:

  • Locate your gas meter and turn off the gas supply.
  • Open windows and doors, ventilate the area to disperse the gas.
  • Avoid flames and sparks. Do not light matches, use lighters, or turn on electrical switches.
  • Leave the area and evacuate everyone from the property.
  • Contact the National Gas Emergency Helpline on 0800 111 999.
  • Do not return into the building, stay outside until a professional tells you it is safe to go back in.

Annual gas safety inspections

We are required by regulations to ensure the safety of gas fittings and appliances in their properties. Here are the key responsibilities:

  • Ensure all gas fittings are kept in a safe condition.
  • Conduct an annual safety check – we will need access to your property to complete these checks. We are not there to check/asses the condition of your home; we are there to make sure your property is safe.
  • All installation, maintenance, and safety checks are performed by a CORGI-registered gas installer.
  • Keep a record of each safety check for at least two years.
  • Give a copy of the safety record to each tenant within 28 days of the check, and provide a copy to new tenants before they move in.

Carbon monoxide

If there is a gas boiler in your property, you will have a carbon monoxide alarm.

This is checked as part of the annual gas safety inspection.

If your alarm sounds, immediately leave your property and contact SGN.
