Keeping your bike safe in Portsmouth

Portsmouth City Council and Hampshire Constabulary run regular events to help residents and students protect their bikes. At these events, you can get your bike security marked for free.

Your bike will be marked with a special code and added to the national Bike Register. This helps police return stolen bikes to their owners and makes it harder for thieves to sell them.

You don’t need to book – just turn up. Marking is done on a first-come, first-served basis.

Upcoming council events

Our next events take place on the following date:

  • Friday 17 July – The Hard, 1pm to 3pm

Hampshire Constabulary events

These take place from 1.30pm to 3.30pm between the University of Portsmouth Library and Ravelin Sports Centre on Cambridge Road. They run on the last Thursday of each month during the university’s academic year – September 2026 to May 2027.

Locking your bike

To keep your bike safe, use two different types of locks – for example, a strong D-lock and a sturdy chain. This makes it harder for thieves to steal your bike.

Tips for locking your bike:

  • lock both wheels and the frame to a bike stand or something solid
  • keep the lock tight so the bike is hard to move
  • make sure the lock doesn’t touch the ground
  • use locks that are rated as secure – check the Sold Secure website before buying
  • expect to pay around £40 or more for a good lock

Get insurance

Check if your home insurance covers your bike when it’s away from home. Make sure the full value of your bike is included. If your bike is expensive, you might need separate insurance.
