A new draft Local Plan for the city has been prepared by the council. Residents, local organisations, and businesses are invited to comment on the Plan as part of a final eight -week technical public consultation starting tomorrow on the 9 July running until 3 September 2024.

The Local Plan is the statutory development plan for Portsmouth that will guide development in the city up to 2040. This Plan allocates sites for development, sets targets for new homes and jobs. It also introduces city wide policies on design, greening and the climate emergency.

This is a final technical public consultation before submitting the Local Plan for independent examination.

From the 9 July, the pre-submission Local Plan can be viewed on the council’s website at portsmouth.gov.uk/localplan . Two drop-in in person events are also being held where the details of the Plan can be discussed in person with planning staff:

  • Saturday 13 July, 10am – 1pm at Cosham Library
  • Tuesday 16 July, 12noon – 3pm at the Central Library, Guildhall Walk

Councillor Hugh Mason, Cabinet Member for Planning Policy & City Development, said:

“The Local Plan, once adopted, will be the blueprint for Portsmouth’s development until 2040. It sets the framework for planning decisions, ensuring applications align with our collective vision. I’m eager to see the results from this consultation process. Together, we can shape the future of Portsmouth”.

Following the consultation, the Plan will be submitted to government where a Planning Inspector will be appointed to assess the plan at public hearing sessions. Once approved, it will become the definitive plan for Portsmouth until 2040.
