You can apply for temporary roles at upcoming Portsmouth City Council elections. These roles are ideal if you have strong customer service or administrative skills and want to support the democratic process.
We recruit ahead of each election. If recruitment for a specific election has closed, you can still apply to join our reserve list. We will then contact successful applicants if a suitable role becomes available.

How to apply
To apply, you need to:
- be aged 18 or over
- be entitled to work in the UK
- not work on behalf of a candidate during the election campaign
- decide which roles you are interested in
- provide your contact details
Portsmouth City Council employees do not need to take annual leave to work at a polling station, but must have approval from their line manager.
Poll Clerk
Working hours
Early morning to late evening on polling day
Pay
Set fee plus training payment
You must have good customer care skills and attention to detail.
What you’ll do
- Support the Presiding Officer in running the polling station
- Check voter ID documents
- Issue ballot papers
- Mark the electoral register
- Help manage queues and direct voters if needed
You’ll need to attend training and be available for the full polling day, including setting up and closing the station.

Pay
Higher set fee plus training payment
You must have:
- previous experience, or have been a Poll Clerk at least twice
- excellent administration and interpersonal skills, and retain a calm and assured approach when under pressure
- access to your own transport (mileage will be payable)
What you’ll do
- Be responsible for running the polling station
- Ensure the voting process is carried out correctly and securely
- Follow instructions from the Returning Officer
- Complete paperwork and return ballot boxes and documents after the poll
You’ll need to attend training and collect equipment before polling day.
Counting Assistant

Evening and overnight on election day
Pay
Hourly rate
You must be able to work with a high level of speed and accuracy.
What you’ll do
- Verify ballot box contents
- Sort and count ballot papers
- Support the overall counting process
Ballot Box Reception Assistant
Working hours
Evening and overnight on election day
Pay
Hourly rate
The role involves lifting and carrying items and equipment.
What you’ll do
- Receive ballot boxes and materials at the count venue
- Record items as they arrive
- Transfer materials to counting teams
Postal Vote Assistant
Working hours
Daytime shifts in the weeks before polling day
Pay
£13 per hour
You must be able to work with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
What you’ll do
- Prepare and check postal vote packs
- Ensure documents are accurate and complete
- Work as part of a team to meet deadlines
You must be available for all scheduled sessions.
