We are working to stop modern slavery and human trafficking. Portsmouth City Council is part of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Modern Slavery Partnership, and we work with the Police and Crime Commissioner’s office to:

  • Raise awareness of the signs of modern slavery
  • Identify people who may be at risk
  • Respond to reports and incidents

Every year, we publish a statement showing what we have done to prevent slavery and human trafficking.

What is modern slavery?

A person is in slavery if they are:

  • Forced to work
  • Controlled by someone else
  • Treated as property
  • Not free to move around
  • Dehumanised or treated like a thing

How you can help

Modern slavery still happens. It could be in your neighbourhood, workplace, or local businesses.

People trapped in slavery might:

  • Go to the same school as your children
  • Cook food in your local restaurant
  • Work in a nail bar
  • Pack the fruit you eat

We all have a role to play. If you see something, report it. Together, we can stop slavery.

Spot the signs

Look out for people who:

  • Work long hours in unsafe conditions
  • Live somewhere dirty, cramped, or overcrowded
  • Live and work at the same address
  • Cannot move around freely
  • Show signs of abuse
  • Seem scared or withdrawn
  • Avoid asking for help
  • Fear the police or do not know who to trust
  • Do not have their own ID or passport
