Rubbish allowance

Students must comply with our guidelines, including the rubbish allowance for their property.

As standard, Portsmouth households are given a 140-litre rubbish wheelie bin. If they don’t have a bin, they have a 3 bag allowance. Large student households and HMOs (houses in multiple occupancy) may be allowed a larger bin or more bags based on the size of the household. You must be recycling fully to qualify for a bigger allowance.

If you would like to discuss your current rubbish allowance, please phone us on 023 9284 1105 or email recyclingandrubbish@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.

There’s more information on what can be recycled from home and your nearest recycling bank (including glass and textile banks).

End of academic term/year

It is students’ responsibility to legally dispose of their waste. When leaving a property, you will need to make plans to dispose of your waste. You will need to follow our rubbish and recycling guidelines. Save our flyer for all the important things you need to know before you move out.

You can dispose of glass, textiles, CDs and books at the recycling banks throughout the city. If you have larger items you do not need, you can either take them to the recycling centre at Port Solent or email local charity Moving on Project, who will collect items in good condition such as towels, dinner sets, saucepans, beds, sofa, furniture etc.
