Coronavirus (COVID-19)
England is now subject to National lockdown: Stay at Home restrictions. You must stay at home.
More people are choosing electric vehicles. Until now, charging these vehicles has normally happened off-street in car parks, garages and driveways. In built-up cities like Portsmouth, off-street parking isn’t an option for many residents. By installing charge points on-street, residents can charge their plug-in electric vehicles at home.
In 2019, we received funding from the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) to provide around 50 charge points across the city, as a three-year trial. We have already installed 36 charge points following requests. These came from residents who either have an electric vehicle already or plan to buy one soon.
Residents will soon have access to more on-street electric charge points outside homes after the council won a grant for over £200,000 from OLEV. This is for Phase 2 of our on-street residential charge point scheme. You can read an update on the progress of this scheme here.
Portsmouth is the first city to introduce a solution using lamp column electricity. This is where electricity is provided by the street lamp column (either directly or via a bollard) and is charged on a tariff or pay-as-you-go basis. You can find out more about the charging and billing solutions here.
Charging areas are identified by a marked bay. To park in the bay, the vehicle must be plugged in.
Missing out? Please get in touch if you would like access to an electric vehicle charge point. Contact our Transport Planning team via email: transportplan@portsmouthcc.gov.uk. If a charging point is not working, you can call ubitricity on 0800 024 6279 to get it fixed.
We are also trialling electric vehicle charge points in some of our off-street car parks.
