Portsmouth libraries stock a wide variety of resources in different languages, including books and newspapers, language packs, DVDs and CDs. Many of these items are stocked at or can be sent to the branch libraries in Portsmouth.
The central library in Guildhall Square has dictionaries and collections in languages including Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Czech, Farsi, French, German, Hindi, Kurdish, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish, Thai, Turkish and Urdu, as well as:
- children’s dual-language fiction in a wide variety of languages
- basic English texts, also known as Skills for Life, for those improving their reading, writing, maths or Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills
- English for speakers of other languages (ESOL)
Tours of the central library can be arranged for black and ethnic minority groups and ESOL students. Library staff may visit black and ethnic minority groups in Portsmouth and, where appropriate, issue a library ticket so that resources may be lent and exchanged.
