Homeless Day Services

You should speak to Homeless Day Services if you are sleeping rough in Portsmouth. They may be able to book you a bed in the night bed service.

Homeless Day Services offer help to those over 18 who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of becoming homeless. This is part of the integrated recovery service in Portsmouth, and is run by the Society of St James (SSJ).

At the Homeless Day Services you can access:

  • Showers
  • Laundry facilities
  • A basic breakfast: every day including weekends, 8-11am
  • A programme of group activities like cooking and budgeting: Monday to Friday 2-4pm
  • Support with things like benefit claims, referrals for supported housing, budgeting, cooking, and access to healthcare services and substance misuse recovery treatment

Concerned about someone else

If you are concerned about someone you think is sleeping rough, get in touch with StreetLink and provide some details so that local agencies can try to connect the person sleeping rough with the available help.


Homeless Day Services (HDS)

If you are homeless call Housing Needs Advice & Support, Portsmouth City Council on 02392 834989 – (Monday-Sunday 8-4) or speak to the Outreach Team – Society of St James.

Homeless Day Services is direct access day service for people who are street homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

We are open access drop in service offering safe space to address your homelessness needs and receive personalised support.

If you prefer, you are able to come in and book an afternoon 1-2-1 slot to get support.

We are currently working on a booking in system due to Covid-19 restrictions with hourly slots.

What types of support you can expect to receive:

  • Free hot breakfast and hot drinks 7 days a week.
  • Washing facilities – we provide free toiletries.
  • Laundry facilities.
  • Clothing store.
  • Lockers to store personal possessions.
  • 1-2-1 appointments in the afternoons, offering personalised support depending on individuals’ needs.
  • Various bite-size workshops (please check with staff).
  • Substance misuse supported housing referrals.
  • “Care of” (C/O) address.
  • Support with benefits.
  • Advice and guidance to other services such as Recovery Hub, Advice Portsmouth etc.
  • Help and support finding suitable accommodation.
