Portsmouth City Council has produced a handy guide to help tenants and leaseholders who wish to rent out a room in their home.
Increased cost of living and changes to benefits may mean that making ends meet will become more difficult, so renting out a room could be an option to give you extra income.
There is a guide available to help you with renting out a room in your home. It offers practical tips including where to find a lodger, what qualities to look for and other useful advice. It also sets out your responsibilities as a landlord and advises what help the council can provide.
You can also download some useful documents to accompany the guide:
- agreement to be completed by you and your lodger
- checklist
- inventory to help you record the condition and quantity of furniture in the lodger’s room
- notification for you to complete about your intention to take in a lodger
For more information about renting out a room, contact housing or speak to your area housing office.
