Greening the city is a key priority for Portsmouth City Council. This new fund offers up to £5,000 for community groups and organisations greening projects.

The fund will provide grants for projects such as tree planting, planting for nature and biodiversity, and engaging the community with nature.

The fund explained

The City Greening Fund is designed to support projects that aim to make Portsmouth a greener and healthier place. The council invites projects that deliver against Portsmouth City Council’s ‘Greening Strategy Objectives’:

  • Increase tree canopy
  • Respond to the climate emergency
  • Plant for nature and increasing biodiversity
  • Connect people with nature and community engagement
  • Promote active travel
  • Improve public spaces

Who can apply

Community groups or charities who apply for funding must provide the following to be considered:

  • A constitution (or rules)
  • Two quotes from suppliers – If you are seeking funding to purchase goods or equipment
  • A bank account in the name of the organisation with a recent bank statement for evidence
  • A policy describing how they will safeguard children, young people, and vulnerable adults
  • Financial breakdown of full project costs

How are grants awarded?

Assessment of funding applications will be made using a scoring matrix. Applicants will need to score a minimum of six points to progress to consideration by a panel.

The panel will include council officers from services including Culture and Leisure, Finance, Landscape Architect team, and Climate Strategy. There will also be representatives from guest external stakeholders.
