The Prime Minister announced that a UK Parliamentary General election will be held on Thursday 4 July 2024.

The Members of Parliament for Portsmouth’s two parliamentary constituencies will be elected: Portsmouth North and Portsmouth South.

The elections will take place on Thursday 4 July and polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm.

The list of candidates will be available on this page at 5pm Friday 7 June.

You now need photo id when voting at a polling station

The government introduced new rules last year that require all voters to show photo id when voting at a polling station. Find out more on our Voter ID page.

Registering to vote

You must be included on the electoral register to be able to vote at these elections. If you are not registered to vote, you can apply online at

Only British, Irish and Commonwealth citizens are entitled to vote at UK parliamentary elections.

The deadline for registering to vote at these elections is Tuesday 18 June.

Voting by post

If you are unable to vote in person at these elections, you can vote by post. Anyone can vote by post; you don’t need to have a special reason. If you wish to apply for a postal vote, we must receive your application by 5.00pm Wednesday 19 June. Find out more about how to vote by post.

If you hand deliver your postal vote

If you are unable to return your postal vote by Royal Mail, you can deliver it to a polling station or the Civic Offices. If you hand deliver your postal vote, you must complete a form when handing it in. You must not return your postal vote in the Civic Offices post box. If you do not complete a return form when you hand deliver you postal vote, it will be rejected. Visit our voting by post page for more information.

Voting by proxy

You can appoint someone to vote on your behalf as a proxy. If you wish to appoint a proxy, the deadline for applications is 5.00pm Wednesday 26 June. Find out more about how to vote by proxy.
