Your council tax is needed to help pay for lots of services we provide for Portsmouth people, including essential and critical services such as care for vulnerable adults and children and support for homeless people. It also helps to fund police and fire services.

We are also paying more for some critical services that are needed to help the vulnerable as a result of the pandemic.

We appreciate that many residents are struggling financially at this time and we understand the anxiety this can cause.

At this time we have to target support at those who need it the most. If you are in difficulties, we will do our best to help. Please let us know as soon as you can.

Do you qualify for a discount?

If you’re on a low income you could qualify for council tax support. You can find out more and fill in an application form here.

If you live alone, are a student or have certain disabilities then you may be eligible for a discount or exemption.

You can also set up a direct debit.

You can also pay in person. You can drop in at the Civic Offices to make a payment: 9am–4pm, Mon–Fri. Cashiers are open 9am–1pm, self-serve payment machines from 1pm–4pm.
