Portsmouth will join towns and cities around the country in celebrating His Majesty King Charles III being crowned alongside the Queen Consort.

Celebrating the Coronation

The Coronation ceremony will take place at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6 May and will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Buckingham Palace has said that the event will reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry.

Many Portsmouth residents will remember the last coronation, in 1953, when Queen Elizabeth II was crowned and there were many street parties around the city.

This time, residents and community groups will again mark this historic event by holding street parties over the bank holiday weekend. As on previous national occasions, we’ll be covering the cost of road closures and insurance to help make these celebrations happen.

Apply to hold a Coronation street party

The deadline to submit an application to hold a street party to mark the King’s Coronation was Friday 3 March 2023.

We received over 80 applications which are now being reviewed. Please note that if your location has a high number of street parties, we may request to move your date.

Missed the deadline? Don’t worry – there are still lots of ways to get involved….
