Portsmouth has five railway stations, making it easy to commute to the city from across Hampshire and West Sussex. Council staff can benefit from an interest-free loan for annual rail travel and, if they have an easit discount card, discounts of 15%  on rail travel (www.easit.org.uk).

 

Annual season ticket with interest free loan

Help is at hand for staff who travel by train, with an annual season ticket with an interest free loan and discounts of either 10%  or 15% (see below).

 

The council offers staff an interest-free loan to buy an annual train season ticket, repayable in 10 equal monthly payments which come straight out of your salary.

 

The annual season ticket offers a whole package of additional benefits, including 52 weeks travel for the price of 40. To qualify for the discounts you need to be a permanent member of staff and travel within the discount area, but please note terms and conditions apply. 

 

The SWR 10% discount area stretches from Weymouth in the west, Woking to the north, and east to Littlehampton. You can check out the area in the SWR 10% scheme discount map attached below. Please note that this is not the same map as the wider SWR map which extends much further. 

 

Easit - staff discount on train tickets 

Council staff can also use their easit discount card alongside the annual ticket loan. Please note that our arrangement with SWR for the purchase of annual season tickets takes precedence over the easit discounts. However where the SWR and easit terms and conditions fit it is possible to benefit from a 15% discount rather than a 10% discount.  www.easit.org.uk

 

Some restrictions apply. If it is not a SWR service you will not be able to apply for the 15% easit discount. Not all services shown on the SWR network map are operated by SWR and therefore your start station may be excluded from the offer, because non SWR operators run the services out of that station. We recommended that you use the SWR network map as a starting point, checking which operator runs services from your start station before making your application. This can be done by using the journey planning tool on www.nationalrail.co.uk. Just enter the start and finish stations, and then click 'details' which will show which operator runs the service.

 

Some Southern Rail services from Littlehampton to Havant are already included in the SWR agreement.

If you are applying for the first time, you will also need a photo card which can be obtained from any staffed station ticket office. If you are using the easit discount you will also need to carry your easit card with you at all times.

Portsmouth has an extensive network of bus routes, and 95% of households are situated within a five-minute walk of a bus stop.

 

The council has negotiated with the city’s main two bus providers, First and Stagecoach, to offer staff cut-price rates on annual season tickets.

Annual tickets

We have also negotiated discounts on the cost of annual tickets for staff. Annual tickets mean you don't have the hassle of buying a new ticket every week/month and interest-free loans are also available to help you meet the cost. Discounts mean the cost can be as little as £1.53 a day, for unlimited bus travel.

 

Combined tickets

You can also get reduced rate tickets available if you want to use a combination of buses across Portsmouth and South Hampshire, as well as linking with other modes of transports.  

 

  • Solent TravelCard (currently available for daily and weekly bus travel across the Solent Travel area) using a variety of bus services. This costs £8 a day or £30 a week for travel across South Hampshire. For more information visit the Solent Travel Card website.
