The council encourages staff to use alternatives to the car to travel to and from work. To help staff we offer a number of benefits to cyclists including the cycle to work scheme through the My Rewads portal. coming soon.

The Cycle to Work scheme is a government initiative that encourages alternative travel and reduces our environmental impact. Not only does it reduce your carbon footprint, but also allows you to spread the cost of getting a new bike, save on Income Tax and National Insurance and increase your fitness.

Choose from over 500 brands and almost 2000 stores across the UK.

You can make big savings on the cost of a bike and safety equipment.

  • Cycling is a great form of exercise.
  • Cycling to work is good for the environment.
  • Cycling to work can save you money on travel costs.
  • Cycling to work can make your journey time more predictable.

How the scheme works

If your application is successful the council pays for the full cost of the bike and any safety equipment you need. This is then paid back by way of a salary sacrifice arrangement under a Hire Agreement between you and your employer. This means that you agree to forego an amount from your salary each month in return for the benefit of a bicycle and safety equipment.

This, in turn, reduces the amount of income tax and national insurance that you pay each month. Depending on what you buy you could save between £80- £320 on your bike over the year.

For more information, go to My Rewards.

  • Cycle parking

If you work in the Civic Offices you can leave your bike in the bike compound, located in the underground car park at the Civic Office.  The compound is secured with swipe card access, and you can only gain entry if your council ID card has been registered with facilities management.

To request use of the cycle compound please email

You are still strongly advised to buy the best lock you can afford.
