Who are we?
The Sensory Impairment Team is based in the Civic Offices, and is a highly regarded Team within the Inclusion Service which is an integral part of the Education Department. The team comprises of Specialist Teacher Advisers, Communication Support Workers for hearing impaired pupils, Intervenors and a rehabilitation worker for visually impaired pupils.

What are our objectives?
We work with sensory impaired children and students from 0 - 25 years of age, at home or other pre-school settings, in schools and colleges whose hearing or visual impairment has an effect on education, mobility and the ability to live independently.
• Specialist assessment, teaching, support and advice for individual young people with sensory impairment and their families.
• Contributing to individualised education programmes and liaising with Health, Social Care and other professionals.
• Delivering specialist training to mainstream and special school/college staff.
• Provision of specialist teacher support for planning provision and the placement and monitoring of pupils with a sensory impairment.
Our aim is to maximise the educational opportunities for every individual child and young person, working in partnership with parents and carers, teachers and colleagues in other agencies. We aim for children and young people to achieve the following outcomes:- be healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve at school and out of school, make a positive contribution and work towards being as independent as possible in adult hood.
What is the role?
- To support deaf and hearing impaired pupils with all aspects of communication in a school environment.
- Secure access to curriculum for pupils by interpreting content of lessons through appropriate signing medium.
- Develop individual child’s knowledge and use of signing to support language development understanding and broaden learning.
- Work under the direction of the Specialist Teacher Adviser, Hearing Impairment in liaison with the class teacher to ensure the pupil has access to the National Curriculum.
- Check that hearing aids/radio aids and cochlear implant are functioning efficiently and take appropriate action if they are faulty.
- Enable the hearing impaired pupil to achieve by delivering support using appropriate method of communication: Sign Supported English/Signed English. (BSL where appropriate)
- Foster language acquisition and development in a manner appropriate to the age/language level of the pupil.
- Prepare beforehand for the introduction of new concepts/vocabulary, e.g. compile a list of key words before a topic is introduced.
- Prepare materials for computer aided learning experiences.
- Organise collections of additional materials to enhance learning experiences.
- Act as a facilitator in group discussions to enable pupil to take an active part.
- Take responsibility for filling in home/school notebook/diary in close liaison with the appropriate teacher.
- Ensure that important information reaches home but expect pupil to take increasing responsibility for this appropriate to the age of the child.
- Assist the pupil to: develop self-confidence, organise self, to become an active learner.
- Liaise with the Specialist Teacher Adviser of the Hearing Impaired and act as communicator between teacher of the Hearing Impaired and school staff when timetable constraints prevent personal discussion.
- Ensure that the appropriate member of staff is informed if the pupil is experiencing particular difficulties.
- Promote deaf awareness across the school.
- To perform any other relevant duties within the purview of the post.

Who is the person?
- Be appropriately qualified with Signature sign language level 2 Qualification (ESSENTIAL) and knowledge of Signed English (i+ ii). (Desirable but not essential).
- Possess a sound base of current issues pertinent to the communicator role.
- Have good personal presentation and credibility with a range of potential client groups.
- Have an insight into your own behaviour and professional boundaries with staff, parents and pupils, and the ability to reflect on practice (in individual and group situations with clients and colleagues).
- Have the ability to work individually and as part of a team (these are equally important in this role).
- Be able to demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.
- Have excellent self-management skills (prioritising, time management, recognising limitations, planning further professional development).
- Be able to evidence growth and learning from training and prior employment experience.
9. Ability to advise on and teach the use of specialist software and equipment, under the guidance of the specialist teacher adviser.
