Enhancing the quality of life for people with dementia (and their carers) is a key priority for Portsmouth. It is objective one of the Portsmouth Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy, which can be downloaded below.

Latest statistics show that:

  • 2186 Portsmouth residents will have some form of dementia
  • 55% (1202) will be mild, 32% (700) will be moderate, 13% (284) will be severe
  • about a third (772) will be male and two thirds (1414) will be female
  • 51 will be early onset (<65 years old) and 2135 will be late onset (>65 years old)
  • 1703 will be living in the community and 483 will be living in residential care

We want Portsmouth to be a dementia friendly city where people with dementia feel included and supported, get diagnosed early, find information and support easy to access, and get the right treatments and services when they need it. We want to make sure that carers of people with dementia are valued and supported.

To help us achieve this we have joined together with local partner organisations to develop a plan of action.
